3 Tips for Success in the New Year

Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? The start of a new year seems like a good time to assess the things we want to change in our lives and the prospect of a fresh start often inspires us to set new goals for the year. But how do you actually succeed in our resolutions?

  1. The first challenge is to set goals that are specific enough that you can actually achieve them. We often set vague goals like “eat better” or “lose weight”. Without specifics, you have no way of creating a plan or tracking your progress throughout the year. So instead of “eating better” or “losing weight”, set more concrete goals such as “filling half my cart with vegetables each time I shop”, or “lose 30 pounds by August”
  2. The second challenge is planning. Once we have our goals set, we often think the work is done, and that identifying the goal will naturally lead to achieving it; but having a firm plan in place will help you stick to your resolution in the long run, especially during times of stress. Strategies such as creating weekly menus, scheduling regular exercise, and setting attainable short term goals help maintain motivation.
  3. Setting goals and having a great plan in place won’t work if you don’t also have a good support system. This could be a work out or diet buddy, a personal trainer or just a supportive group of friends. Surround yourself with people who are positive and want to succeed as much as you do!

Set your goals for the year, create a plan for how you will achieve them and measure their success, and surround yourself with a strong support network. Then, watch your New Year’s resolution become a reality!
