Whey Protein Alternatives

Protein Powders Explained By Kirkland Personal Trainer

Whey protein (especially whey protein isolate) is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to protein supplementation because it has all the different amino acids that help build muscle, it has a high bioavailability (meaning your body is able to use it easily), and is absorbed quickly so it makes the perfect after work-out protein shake.

I never considered looking at other protein powders until my wife became a vegetarian and needed a non-dairy based protein powder. And surprisingly, I found that vegetarian protein powders are pretty good too.

Most vegetarian proteins don’t have the balanced amino acid profile that whey protein has, which is why most people use whey, but if you blend different types then you can actually create a balance profile, without some of the nasty side effects from whey protein (stomach upset, fatigue, headaches, etc).

There are some great brands out there such as Sun Warrior and Vega who have created these great protein blends with probiotics and lots of other good stuff, but they can be pretty pricey.

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, what I like to do is buy just plain yellow pea protein powder and brown rice protein powder and mix the two together to get the right amount of amino acids. It’s sugar free and has no artificial flavors or sweeteners! This is also great if you have food allergies because they’re both considered hypoallergenic and are gluten free, dairy free and soy free. So if you’re looking for something a little different, or if you’re tired of the stomach issues most people get from whey protein, give vegetarian proteins a shot. They’ve come a long way and will give you all the amino acids you need to build lean muscle and get great results from your fitness program.
