Healthier Alternative to Gatorade by your Kirkland Personal Trainer

Have you been wondering what to drink during your workouts? Me too!…and I think I finally found it. Although there are a few decent products out there like Gatorade and Powerade, I can do you one better…one that’s HEALTHIER.

After reading various articles and through a lot of trial and error, I finally found my intra-workout drink of choice. It’s homemade, it only has 3 ingredients, it’s all natural, and it tastes great. I sipped on this last night while playing hockey and had an abundance of energy throughout the entire game…I even scored a goal!

BUT…some of you might be thinking: “why not just drink water?”. The short answer to that is that we need more than just water to stay truly hydrated and to keep our energy levels up. So, before I give you the magic formula, I should probably explain why an intra-workout drink is so valuable during your workouts.

  • During activities with short bouts of exercise mixed with short bouts of rest such as weight lifting, hockey, and football, your body relies on carbohydrates as its major energy source. By constantly supplying your body with fast digesting carbs during your workout, you ensure that your body always has an adequate amount of carbs (energy) it needs, when it needs it.
DATES: A Fast Digesting Carb
  • When you workout at a high level of intensity or for a long duration, your body goes into a catabolic state (muscle breakdown) which can hurt your performance. To help repair this muscle breakdown, we need the assistance of Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA). BCAAs, consisting of 3 essential amino acids (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine), assist with protein synthesis to help rebuild damaged muscle tissue during high stress activities…this is a MUST if you want to maintain a high level of performance.
  • When your body sweats it loses electrolytes – chemical substances necessary to maintain normal bodily functions. As a result, it is necessary for us to replenish these electrolytes during and after exercise. This intra-workout drink contains an adequate amount of electrolytes to get you through your workout.

  • You’ll notice below that this intra-workout drink doesn’t contain a lot of protein. The reason is that protein requires energy to breakdown…and during your workout you want all your energy focused on your activity, not breaking down newly introduced protein. This is why it’s important to consume protein throughout the day (some with each meal) and immediately after your workout to ensure your body is prepared to repair your tired muscles.

With that said, here’s what you need to make a quick and tasty intra-workout drink (notice the lack of artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial coloring):

  • 4-5 pitted dried dates (ground up)
  • 500ml of 100% pure coconut water
  • 1 scoop of BCAA powder

Simply mix together and take with you to your next workout.

  • Fat: 0g
  • Protein: 1g

Try sipping on this throughout your workout (don’t drink it all at once). You’ll probably notice some small bits of dates that won’t completely grind up…that’s where the carbs are so make sure you drink those too (they’re delicious).
