Let’s face it. The holiday season is NOT the best time for diets. With all the temptation around, it’s hard not to say “Screw it! Bring on that third piece of pie.”

But the truth is, we can indulge and enjoy ourselves on special occasions without gaining back all the weight that we worked so hard to lose.

Just follow these simple tips and not only will you enjoy your Thanksgiving, your waistline will too.

  1. Have a health snack about 20 minutes before you head out for your Thanksgiving dinner so that you’re not starving when you’re confronted with all of that tempting food. We’re more likely to overeat, and overeat quickly if we’re hungry.
  2. Take your time when eating. Slow eaters tend to avoid excess calorie intake. If you’re going for seconds, it can take as much as 20 minutes for your brain to recognize that you have had enough to eat, so let your brain catch up with your stomach before you grab that second piece of pie and you will cut down on the extra calories you might otherwise take in
  3. Go skinless when you eat your turkey. If you choose lean cuts and skip the skin, you will reduce the amount of fat and cholesterol you take in.
  4. Watch your portions! Take small portions of everything and that way you’ll be able to get just enough of all those yummy side dishes without having to break out the stretchy pants.
  5. Watch the fat content! Sure that green bean casserole and those yams are vegetables, but they’re often cooked with butter and cream and all sorts of fatty, yummy goodness. Just because it’s a vegetable doesn’t give you a pass. If you’re the chef, try substituting low fat or no fat ingredients, and if not just stick to smaller portion sizes. If you’re still hungry (after waiting those 20 minutes of course) you can always go back for seconds.
